Harrisburg
Harrisburg is located northwest of Philadelphia. It became the capitol in October 1812. It is estimated to have a population of 49,000 people. Hershey is just ten miles away from Harrisburg. Statehood
Pennsylvania became a state in December 12, 1787. It is one of the thirteen original colonies. This state is where the people signed the Declaration of Independence. It was the second state to ratify the United States Constitution. It is the 33rd largest state. |
Quaker Province
William Penn was born in London on October 24, 1644. Penn was wealthy and helped his fellow Quakers. A Quaker is a member of a religion. England's King Charles owed money to Penn's dead father. William Penn requested that he'd be given land in the American colonies to repay the debt. WarsWestern Pennsylvania belonged to England's enemy, France. Britain colonists' relations with Native Americans got bad. The settlers took over much of the Shawnee and Delaware land and called it the walking purchase. The walking purchase granted the colonists land as far as they can walk in 1 1/2 days. The Native Americans got cheated out of their land, because the colonists had several man walk, instead of one.
Industrial AgeAfter the civil war, Pennsylvania developed a strong Economy. It quickly started growing manufacturing industries. the states location is at the eastern seaboard. Within a decade Pennsylvania supplied most of the nations coal.
